· Family Early Literacy Initiatives-National Latino Children’s Institute
The purpose of Words for the Future is to provide Latino families with vital information concerning brain development in the first three years of life. Words for the Future uses the strengths of the Latino culture and innovative outreach strategies. Words for the Future—Creando el Futuro was developed to provide Latino families with strategies and skills to help their young children learn. As the child’s first teachers, parents have the unique opportunity to shape their child’s future by providing him with meaningful interactions. The underlying premise of Words for the Future is that during every moment a child is learning. Parents who talk, sing, read, explain and explore with their children, even during their first days of life, are giving their children a gift that will last a lifetime.

Brownsville has been chosen as one of 3 national design sites to create an early literacy initiative for Latino populations called.El Pueblo Cuenta. This initiative will draw attention to the importance of literacy while empowering families to build an environment that facilitates reading. A variety of culture-based community events, leadership development opportunities, and public education activities are planned to convey information to Latinos in their own language and remove barriers to literacy for their children El Pueblo Cuenta will reach Latinos in four locations: where they work, play, purchase and pray. Organizations and businesses in all these venues will be essential partners for the program. Grocery/retail stores, churches, clinics, libraries, parks, etc. will have important roles to play. Funding partners may include Meadows Foundations and Verizon Communications.
